Lastly, in the accession folder, will be found DeKalb County History Center text that states: "Sycamore friends George James, Fred Love, Brigham Safford, and Elbert Haight took a canoe trip down the Rock River in 1901. Their trip was briefly noted in the August 3, 1901 "Sycamore True Republican", the day they left for the trip. They traveled 115 miles by canoe from Byron to Barstow, IL, according to an account by George James. They returned August 14, 1901. The 96-mile train trip home only brought them to DeKalb, George reports. So, they "drove across the country to Sycamore and got to bed about two Wednesday morning". At least two other parties from Sycamore were also on the Rock River at the time. |
