Tub of cooking lard, "Oscar Mayer 100% Leaf Lard Open Kettle Rendered" 4 lbs. in weight. The logo that appears on tin was used circa 1919-1961. Printed at the bottom of the can: Oscar Mayer & Co., General Offices, Chicago, Ill. Leaf Lard is taken from the fat that grows around the kidneys of pigs. The highest grade of lard, it was a staple fat used in American homes for cooking & baking from the frontier days up until mid-to-late 20th century. In 1883, Oscar F. Mayer & brothers Gottfried & Max, opened a meat market business in Chicago, Illinois. The company's name changed to Oscar Mayer & Co. in 1919. Corporate offices moved from Chicago to Madison, Wisconsin in 1955. The company currently is known for its hot dogs, bologna, bacon, ham and Lunchables products. |
